Regulating Artificial Intelligence the European Way
The draft Regulation on Artificial Intelligence (AI Act) is the world's first proposal to regulate on AI. Through a horizontal and risk-based approach, the European Commission aims to ensure that AI systems respect fundamental rights and are safe to use. Protection against discrimination, mass surveillance and the loss of anonymity in public spaces are important goals. However, there are even broader questions from a consumer perspective. Our everyday lives will be increasingly affected by AI, be it in decisions on loan applications or the use of digital assistance systems. Given these changing parameters, how can we ensure that AI-based decisions remain comprehensible for individuals and that those affected are able to assert their rights?
